Hassocks Parish Council newsletter - June 2025

Speed Limit Consultation

Throughout March & April we held a consultation asking residents their views on introducing a 20mph ‘zone’ in the village. Our councillors also engaged with residents at the village market on 22nd March and spoke to parents outside both the infants and junior schools. The response was overwhelmingly in favour of introducing the scheme. We thank everyone who either signed the petition or took the time to email in their thoughts, all are gratefully received. Our proposal has now been submitted to West Sussex County Council as a Community Highways Scheme; we await the outcome.

Street Trees

Many residents will be familiar with the Hassocks Street Tree Planting Scheme which Hassocks Parish Council has been supporting since 2008. To enable Hassocks to benefit from the planting of several new trees every year, the Parish Council funds a proportion of the cost to WSCC for each tree, this is currently set at £257 per tree. Funding has been provided by Hassocks Parish Council for over 400 trees since the project started, with much welcomed additional funds from community organisations including Hassocks Community Organisation as well as some individual donations. All additional funds help to increase the number of trees that can be planted each year and are therefore greatly appreciated; anyone wishing to donate can do so by contacting the Parish Office.

Hassocks Parish Council remains committed to providing a budget for additional trees around the village and would like to invite any residents who would like a tree to register their interest with the Parish Council Office before Friday 27th June 2025.

The register of applications for a tree will be collated and passed onto the WSCC Arboriculturist team. A member of the team will make a site assessment of each location to confirm that it is suitable, the County Council will then arrange to supply and plant the trees in all approved locations during the winter.
This is also open to any requests for the replacement of verge trees that have been removed or have died.
